No, of course not! That would take too long. Instead, you look at your notebook and say: "I already know the first part equals 5, so I just add 1 more to get 6!"
This is exactly what Dynamic Programming (often called DP for short) is!
Dynamic Programming is a super-smart way of solving complex problems by breaking them down into simpler, smaller questions. The magic trick is that we write down the answers to the smaller questions in a notebook (memory) so we never have to do the same math twice!

In the Recursion guide, we learned that a function can call itself to open smaller "nesting dolls" of a problem. But pure recursion has a huge weakness: it is extremely forgetful.
Imagine trying to calculate the 5th Fibonacci number using pure recursion. The computer ends up calculating the 2nd Fibonacci number over and over again from scratch! It does the exact same homework multiple times because it has no memory.
Dynamic Programming is Recursion with a Brain. By adding a memory table, we turn a program that would take billions of years to run into one that finishes in a fraction of a millisecond!

- Why do we allocate an array of size
n + 1? In programming, arrays are 0-indexed (meaning the first box is at position 0). If we want to find the answer for step10(wheren = 10), we need to accessdp[10]. If we allocated an array of size exactly 10, the indices would only go from0to9, causing our program to crash with an "Out of Bounds" error! Making the array sizen + 1gives us indices from0tonso we can query our step numbers directly. - Why do we initialize

Therefore, the total number of ways to reach step 5 is equal to (all the ways to reach step 4) + (all the ways to reach step 3). The code does exactly this for every step starting from step 3 all the way to

- Base Case: To make $0, we need exactly 0 coins (
dp[0] = 0). - State Relation: For any amount
a, we check what happens if we use each coin option. For a coin of valuec, the coins needed would be:1 + dp[a - c](the 1 coin we just chose + the best way to make the remaining amount). - We want the absolute minimum option among all coin choices:

Let's unpack the logic behind the Coin Change solution:
- Why do we initialize the array with
amount + 1? Since we are looking for the minimum number of coins, we need to compare options and pick the smallest one using amin()function. If we started our array filled with0s, thenmin(0, our_coin_count)would always choose0, which is incorrect! To fix this, we fill the array with a large value representing "infinity" (in this case,amount + 1, because it's impossible to need more coins than the target amount itself unless we are using fractional coins, which we aren't). This acts as a sentinel value so any valid coin count we find will easily replace it. - Why is
dp[0] = 0? This is our starting building block (Base Case). How many coins do you need to make exactly $0? You need exactly 0 coins. - Why do we have nested loops?
- Outer Loop (
for a from 1 to amount): We use a bottom-up builder strategy. We don't try to solve $11 right away. Instead, we solve the problem for $1 first, write it in our notebook, then solve for $2, then $3, all the way up to $11. - Inner Loop (
